Group Psychotherapy
What is an Interpersonal Process Group?
Interpersonal group therapy is a powerful way to learn about ourselves and our relationships with others. It is common for people to confuse interpersonal group therapy with support groups or psychoeducational groups, in which people talk about shared experiences and offer one another encouragement or learn behavioral skills. While support groups can be helpful, this model is not consistent with what occurs in a well-led interpersonal process group. An interpersonal therapy group is a group of people (usually 6 - 8 people) who meet together weekly to work through relational issues that lead to unwanted psychological symptoms or dissatisfaction in relationships. If you’d like to get a general sense of what this kind of group therapy might look like, click this link here to an 7-part mini-series called “Group” led by a seasoned group therapist, Elliot Zeisel, PhD, LCSW, CGP. My work with interpersonal group therapy is informed by modern analysis from the Center for Group Studies in New York where I am currently studying.
